Shut down betting shops near schools- Dr. Adutwum tells the Gaming Commission


 Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Ghana's Minister of Education, has encouraged the Gaming Commission of Ghana's leadership to step up efforts to shut down betting enterprises that break the rules governing their operations in the nation.


He mentioned the placement of betting establishments close to educational facilities to attract kids as something that needs to stop.


He claimed that the action will assist restrict the influx of minors into such gaming centers in violation of the rules set down in the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721), which governs their operations, and prohibit children from using such facilities that are close to their institutions.


When he went to the Ghana Gaming Commission's headquarters on Tuesday, Dr. Adutwum made the call.


The purpose of the conference was to enable the two organizations to have an open conversation about the problems associated with the placement of gambling establishments close to educational institutions nationwide and efforts to remedy this issue.


The Education Minister praised the Commission for its involvement in policing operators in the industry, but he asked them to be tenacious in upholding laws that apply to their businesses in order to restore some sanity to the gaming industry.



He urged the Commission to critically examine the locations of betting establishments across the nation, particularly those that are close to schools, and determine what can be done to stop this behavior.


In order to protect their own interests, Dr. Adutwum promised to consult with the Commission about how to stop schoolchildren from storming betting shops, particularly during school hours.
